Does An Artist Need To Create Utility For Their NFT Art?

The short answer is no, the long answer lies in longevity.

What is Utility

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) can utilize different forms of utility, whether it’s membership, redeemability, social NFTs, etc. Since NFTs are already collectible and scarce, adding utility to the equation has sparked some discussion. In-game NFTs are one of the best examples to understand what utility looks like. With the rise of play-to-earn games like Defi kingdoms, players are earning in-game assets that are NFTs such as heroes, equipment, and kingdoms.

Utility matters long-term. To have longevity, it’ll take people. Networking and creating a community are critical. If you’re not taking steps to create community right now, then fostering a sense of community is a great place to start. 

Art is Art

The tokenization of art shouldn’t in any way undermine what an artist has or will create. Your art is enough as a utility. If you’re an artist, the more confident you are in your art and your vision - the better. As the technology and mechanisms for minting your NFTs expand, it’s paramount that you cultivate that community, where you can both share with and benefit from.

There will be lots of discourse and ideas about what artists should be or shouldn’t be doing with their art with respect to utility. I have the view that your community will be able to see and appreciate your art for what it is. The additional utility can set you apart but it’s not something that should be expected from every artist when their craft is more than enough.

Art doesn’t need anything extra to make it meaningful.
