Mo Money, Less Problems: Why Making Money Is A Valid Purpose
The idea that you need to save the world to run a business is flawed and inaccurate. It’s perfectly acceptable to make an effort solely for compensation. Creating a life you’re proud of is enough as a purpose.
Money, Money, Money
It’s not a sin to start a business to make money. That’s the reason the majority, if not all, of startups are even created. In Super Founders, Ali Tamaseb identifies a misconception that all startups are initiated with the desire to solve a personal problem. Or that the intention is to save the world. Ali Tamaseb shows that many founders want to make money and the message of the origins of the company and their mindset can change later as founders are interviewed and revered.
Before the pandemic, I wanted to go to medical school, now it's a laughable thought. Taking on such an astronomical debt - about 250k+ on average - seems like chasing a wound that will never heal. I still want to help people, especially the most vulnerable: the refugees, the mothers, the elder daughters in immigrant families, those that have disabilities, the women that give give give & never receive.
No Shame
It’s uncomfortable for many to admit that their reason to take risks is due to money because, for the majority, schooling has played a critical role in making this an issue. The idea that you will aspire to and remain an employee is established early in K-12 schooling. It’s difficult to undo years of a one-sided view of the workforce and entrepreneurship.
I'll always take pride in helping people, but it’s also a priority of mine to strive to improve my life in the process. It can be yours as well.
