Warsan Shire And The Unrelenting

“No one leaves home unless home is the mouth of a shark” - Warsan Shire

A consequence of leaving sentences unfinished is that when I come across a writer that writes and completes the necessary sentences, I get emotional.

Warsan Shire finishes her sentences. And comes back to perfect them. It’s alarming to me that something that looks so easy could be the challenge of a lifetime. My aim has been to at least come to an understanding of myself. But that requires more sentence structure - and again - finishing those damn sentences.

I live for the moments, as I slide my finger across the screen onto the next page, where I have to look around and check if anyone else is reading the audacity before me.

Oh the wicked part of me that wants these stories to continue while also fighting them. Sheltering oneself after a battle with its own flesh is an experience too rich and painful to write about. Maybe one day.

Until then, I’ll keep reading Warsan Shire & look away after each sentence.
